Workout Wednesdays – The spirit of giving

It’s Christmas & it’s Wednesday! What a great day to work off all that Chrissy tucker by spending 10 minutes a day training a new behaviour.

In the true spirit of Christmas, today is all about Giving. Yes, that’s right – that elusive “Give”!

So handy when you want the ball back, or the toy, or your slipper…(that’s another story).

Workout Wednesday -Pre-Christmas trick practice

What do you mean, do a trick...? HUFF

What do you mean, do a trick…? HUFF

Puppies love interacting with us and feeling part of the pack. As long as we set the rules and consistently kept up the rules, our puppies will have healthy and happy lives with us.

Part of playing together is creating new and fun ways to enjoy the human-doggie bond.

With Jaxon, I have the best time just ‘mucking about’ doing tricks. Now a doggie knows that if they perform, more than likely they will be rewarded. Tricks are a great way to show off your dog’s special skills – especially at Christmas time.

Workout Wednesday – Four on the floor

Wednesday rolls round all too soon, and today’s workout is all about tips for keeping your doggie from jumping up.

The best place to start for this is reinforcing what is generally known as “four on the floor”. Now, we’re not talking about cars here, but having the dog’s paws (all four of them) on the ground during training and rewards.

10 minutes in the morning or evening, or 5 minutes for both is really all you need to keep your dog interested, working and having fun.

You can start this really easily from when your dog is just a puppy, and all the way through their lives, whenever you need to reinforce the behaviour.

Simple exercises such as walking together, come, heel, and stay can all be places where you reinforce this habit.

And it’s as simple as holding off your reward until the dog has all four feet on the ground. This is especially for owners of small dogs, who have a lot further to go when treating. You may also find that small dogs tend to jump a bit more for attention. I’ve certainly found that a hard habit to break with Jaxon, who loves food and attention.

Workout Wednesdays

We’re taking the lead of some great “Dlogs” we know, and putting some themes into our days here on AgilityPap.

So Wednesdays are going to be all about the kinds of workouts you can do to keep you and puppy fit. Our workouts will take no longer than 10 minutes, and be a great addition to your training or fun. They will be both physical and mental, and should have you and pup feeling great after each session.

Wonder weaves – Final installment

Well, mum thought I did a great job at weaving on the video. So I thought she meant that’s it – no more weaving.

She’s tried to get me to weave this week, but I’d much rather run away, get her to chase me, find a ball, run up and down the stairs. So many other things in life. Anyhow, here’s proof I can actually weave…

Wonder Weaves Video Part 2

The long awaited second instalment of our weaving! Enjoy

Wonder Weaves video part 1

We promised a video – so here’s the first of 3. Hope you enjoy!

Wonder Weaves

It’s an amazing feeling when you really find the partnership between dog and human, and achieve something you’ve been working towards for ages.

Susan Garrett in Australia

Well, it was a bit late to find out, but we discovered this week that Susan Garrett was in Australia for a training camp. Can you imagine a whole week of training with her (well, if you had a pup old enough, and got into the camp)!?

We are really enjoying the 2×2 weaves method, and I can see Jaxon is actually starting to get faster and faster through the weaves. When we watched her DVD, we could hardly believe how fast Susan & her dog Encore went (well, really just how fast Encore was!). Encore was like a streak through the weaves, and hit the entry perfectly every time.

It really inspired us to try harder on getting a bit better, even though we’ll never be as great as Susan & Encore. I recommend if you’re struggling with weave training to check out the DVD, or even read Susan’s Blog
