Discovery Monday- Lickety Split!
I’ve often wondered why Jaxon is such a licky dog. He likes to lick our hands, faces, his feet and even other dogs lips!
While I don’t mind it much, I thought it would be a very annoying thing to do to another dog, especially if that dog is reactive, or doesn’t want other dogs in its face!
There are a bunch of great resources that give you a laundry list of why dogs lick – what occasions, what situations, what time of the day, what behaviours go with it.
I was interested to hear, however, that doggies can be excessive lickers as a sign of jealousy! Sometimes dogs will lick other dogs to get them “nicely” out of their face, or food, or away from their prized possessions (like their owner!).
For example, I’ve noticed that Jaxon will often greet another pup he likes by licking them. However, I’ve now noticed that Jaxon will sometimes lick a dog in the mouth excessively if I’m paying attention to that dog and not Jaxon. It’s not a “Hi I really like you” lick – it’s a “nick-off she’s mine” lick.
In other words, he’s being really annoying to get the other dog to leave.
I also connected that to him licking my feet if he wants to get up on the couch where my feet are – ie: move your feet Mum! Before looking me in the eye & getting the OK to jump up. Cheeky pants!
I’m now keeping tabs on this one and trying to keep Jaxon out of other dog’s faces for a while, and wearing socks more often in the house!

Donna licks us sometimes… the problem is we don’t know what she wants when she does that! heh~
Chowski is an excessive licker. I don’t even know if there is anything behind it. He just likes to lick people. It might be because as a puppy he was a nibbler and we told him “NO” to nibbling but it got replaced with licking….Which is also really annoying!
